Day 62: March 6, 2013 "That" Date with Jeremy

Wednesdays are the best without class. I got to sleep in and then head to the dining courts for lunch as usual. After lunch Bryan, Adam, and I officially decided not to go to Xi’an this weekend and postpone the trip so that we could stay in town to celebrate Jess’s birthday. After that, we decided to fully commit to go to Beijing the following weekend and get everyone on board for an 8-person trip.

After that I was under the impression that we were going to go play tennis so I got changed but by the time I went to find everyone, no one was anywhere to be found. I walked out to the track to see if they had already headed outside but I couldn’t find anybody. I figured I would just go for a run then but there were 2 soccer teams and a baseball team practicing and no one else running around the track so I felt out of place so I aimlessly wandered around campus until I ran into Matt who told me that the guys were all at American football tryouts. We decided that it would be pretty funny to watch, so we decided to head over to the stadium to check it out.

They weren’t there but Matt had an idea of another field they might be on all across campus and it was such a nice day that we decided to just go for it. We eventually found them and could instantly pick out our friends. Tyler with his 6’ 5 build stood out like a sore thumb in addition to all of the other guys since they all had gym shorts on and their tennis shoes. As soon as we walked up a guy asked if Matt or I wanted to play. Obviously I had to decline since I had since retired my powder puff days but we stuck around to watch for a little while. Within a few minutes we realized the boys were actually running practice and were dominating. I could probably catch a football better than half of the Chinese guys there; it was pretty funny to watch the ball just bounce off of them.

After we had seen enough painful football, Matt and I headed back to the dorm and had a good talk about how his girlfriend Shannon, who is in my sorority, will be here next week and we will have to meet up. Once we got back to the dorm we rounded up a group of people to go play soccer, which was fun as always. We played for quite a while and then we invited this whole group of Chinese guys that were really good, so I decided to call it quits and run around the track for a while.

After a good workout I jumped right into the shower and got ready for what, to much surprise, turned out to be a date. So one of the Korean guys Adam and I played badminton with the other day, Jeremy, had texted me and asked if I “had a time” and said he would help me pick out Chinese food since I never really know what I am eating. I figured he meant we would go to the dining courts with Adam and some other people but we ended up going out to a Japanese restaurant off campus. I was a little nervous considering I didn’t think he spoke much English and couldn’t imagine we would have much to talk about but he ended up speaking pretty good English and we actually had a really good conversation. We talked about why we were both studying in China and about our families and about learning knew languages. I thought it was unbelievable that he was learning English on his own and was already pretty good. He told me that today he learned the word “that” and proceeded to say “I drink that coke” and “That is the phone I use” which I thought was hilarious but also pretty awesome that he would just pick a word to learn for the day. Jeremy got fried rice and I got this Osaka pizza, which was delicious. Jeremy told me dinner was on him since I was his first American friend, which was pretty cute.

After dinner we headed back to campus and got some ice cream and sat on a bench by the track and ate it and talked. After we finished we took a lap around the track, which is probably the most Asian date thing to do ever. Every night we make fun of couples walking around the track holding hands so I was just dying. After a lap we headed back to the dorm and said bye and I thanked him for dinner again and of course we happened to be right in front of a group from the trip. They instantly started asking me questions and giving me shit for going on a date, which was pretty funny. After recapping the date to everyone so they could continue to make fun of me, I actually had to get some studying done for the thermo test in the morning. The rest of the night was lame just cramming for thermo but was only improved when Jeremy texted me saying thanks and good luck on my test. With that I called it a night to get some rest to be fresh for the test.
