Day 61: March 5, 2013 "Are you smoking now or later?"

Waking up today was a struggle. My lack of sleep from the night before must have caught up with me in addition to how unbelievably sore I was from the day before. I was so sore that even while tossing and turning in my sleep I realized it. Apparently I did some talking in my sleep as well, which is unusual, but Catriona got a kick out of it. I guess at some point I either asked, “Do you want to smoke now or later?” or “Are you smoking now or later?” very clearly. Not quite sure where that came from but it was at least entertaining.

Class was nothing exciting other than we confirmed that we are going to have another little break from a Tuesday to Sunday at the beginning of April, which is going to be really nice for some more traveling. After class I was pretty set on a nap but held off so I could take care of some travel plans for a possible trip to Xian this weekend. Xian is where the Terracotta Warriors are, but there is also this mountain where you can do this Vast Sky Plank Walk where you literally walk alongside a mountain on a few pieces of wood that have been there for over 700 years. It looks pretty terrifying but absolutely incredible (I recommend Googling some picks or a Youtube video). If we were going to go all the way to Xian we wanted to make sure it was going to be open so I spent the rest of the morning doing some research and emailing and calling travel companies to figure out if it was going to be open. Most people either didn’t speak good enough English or didn’t know what I was talking about so I eventually gave up after sending tons of emails and figured I would just wait for a response.

I then moved on to work on my Plan of Study and pick out my classes for next semester, which was more of a struggle than I thought it would be. Up to this point I haven’t really had any options, so it was kind of weird to have options for 3 of my classes in the next year. I spent the rest of the afternoon looking into different classes and am still unsure of what to take but definitely decided on a technical writing class and possibly an environmental engineering class, one on transportation, or maybe even a management class.

Without much progress made, it was already past dinnertime so Bryan, John, Adam and I decided to go find a restaurant off campus. We stumbled upon this little place with a cycling suit on the wall, so of course John and Adam wanted to go in. The menu had no English but luckily there were some pictures and our waiter was very helpful. He asked us where we were from and when we said America, he instantly asked us if we were from Purdue since he had already met a few other guys in our group. He invited us to join the running club whenever we wanted which was really nice. He then told us that everything on the menu was pretty spicy so he hoped we liked spicy food. With my built up tolerance I wasn’t too scared, so we got some pork dishes, beans, and some soup. The beans and the soup were absolutely delicious and the pork dishes were good but one of them was probably 90% spicy peppers and 10% meat that was just straight fat.

After a pretty filling and cheap meal, we were ready to grab some beer and head back to the dorm for another planet earth power hour to 80’s music. We were all pretty surprised how much we enjoyed the 80’s music and then decided that the power hour should definitely be over when we realized it was 1:15 rather than just an hour. Guess they are trying to resemble the Purdue class structure or something. After that, we played some Irish Poker and then spent the rest of the night talking. We were about ready to call it a night when a group of like 7 other people from the trip stumbled in and were pretty hilarious to watch. After some embarrassing dancing and a noise complain from across the hall, it was time to throw in the towel.
