Day 54: February 26, 2013 Where is that Class?

After feeling pretty confident in how quickly we found our class yesterday, we didn’t leave quite so much time to find our class this morning, which was quite a mistake. We had a group of probably 20 of us aimlessly walking around this building that supposedly had our classroom. There was no room 109, so we decided to check out some other buildings in case what they gave us was wrong. After scattering and meeting back up with making no progress, we eventually got a hold of someone who explained where to go. We were basically nowhere near where we were supposed to go which was unfortunate because it was raining and hardly anyone had umbrellas. We finally found the building we were supposed to be in and soon after the classroom.

We were pretty nervous to walk in 15 minutes late and be stared down, but luckily the class was only our students, which made things a lot better. I guess there was some confusion as far as where the classroom was and the teacher said it took her a while to find it as well so she was very understanding. After that she introduced herself and the course and started in on the material. It involved a lot of chemistry, which I kind of like, and I found it really interesting. It seems like it should be a pretty good class and the teacher is really nice and speaks really good English as well.

We walked out of class to the unpleasant surprise of pouring down rain. Luckily a guy in our class was nice enough to let Jess and I use his umbrella since he had a rain jacket on. After a gross walk back to the dorm we all kind of kept to ourselves until lunch. I went ahead and watched a few online lectures since I realized I was way further behind than I thought and then attempted to dry my clothes since of course I had left them hanging outside in the rain. I went down to the front desk and bought a token but apparently the washer and drier tokens are different which I found out when the lady started yelling at me in Chinese, only leaving me more confused. After no attempt at English from her, I somehow figured out what she meant and paid her for a dryer token and then was set.

After that I grabbed some lunch at the dinning courts, feeling bold, and branched out from my usual noodles and rice. I ended up with something that I still don’t really know what it was but was along the lines of orange chicken strips, slimy noodles, and rice. I’m not exactly convinced the meat was chicken but all of it was actually pretty good. John and I grabbed some bread on the way out that tasted like a spring rolls. After lunch I watched 4 more online lectures to catch up and then took a shower once I was all done. I also grabbed my laundry which took over 2 hours in the dryer and still wasn’t dry. It was definitely better than before so I was happy but I still had to line dry them after that. Luckily Adam and Ron have a line system rigged up in their room so I borrowed that for a couple of my sweatshirts and jeans.

After that I was still under the impression that we were going into the city to go see the Circus but apparently plans had changed and we were going to go bowling. They had already gone for a beer run and even made a makeshift beer bong. They took a giant water bottle and cut off both ends and then bought a tube and connected it with zip ties. It actually worked pretty well and now they have 248 extra zip ties just in case of an emergency! We all hung around for a while experimenting with the beer pong and then headed over to the dinning courts to grab dinner. Adam and I met a few people from Hong Kong who were really nice and helped us order. We both ordered chicken fried rice and somehow ended up with two different things, but both were really good. After we ate, we headed back to the dorm until a group left to go bowl.

Adam, John, Jess, and I were running a little behind and everyone said we would just meet everyone else there in a few minutes. They tricked me and told me we were going and then we ended up just going to the store to buy more beer which was a little upsetting but I guess we might go again tomorrow so it’s all good. On the way home we ran into a group of people from our program that had just bought bikes. Apparently they weren’t very nice because if you turned Kathleen’s handle bars, they would turn but the wheels wouldn’t follow. I was considering buying a bike, but now I am a little skeptical. We finally made it back to the dorm and ended up talking with some more people from Taiwan and then eventually made it back upstairs. We spent the rest of the night hanging out in club 408, as we like to call it, which made for a pretty great time.
